What is PRP for genital function?

Suitable for men and women, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be used to treat conditions associated with genital function. These conditions include erectile dysfunction, vaginal atrophy and urinary incontinence due to a weak pelvic floor. PRP is a derivative of your own blood that has been shown to promote tissue regeneration and healing. It has been used extensively to treat musculoskeletal injuries, and more recently to regenerate dermal tissues (skin and the tissues just below the skin).

What does the process involve?

After a doctor assesses you, a nurse will take your blood (like a normal blood test), which will be spun in a centrifuge to isolate the plasma component. PRP is activated under a light. Then the PRP is injected into the relevant areas of the penis, vagina or pelvic floor. The process will take around 45 minutes to one hour. Local anaesthetic is applied 15-20 minutes before PRP injection, making the injection relatively pain-free.

Here at Surecell, we offer a new technology for genital injections called “XCell” blood stem cells. This technology is more potent than PRP, but costlier.

How does it work?

The growth factors and platelets in the plasma promote cells to multiply and form new tissue, accelerating and enhancing the healing process. PRP contains a much higher concentration of platelets than normal blood. This means that higher concentrations of growth factors are released into the target area.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Allow one hour for the visit. Please drink plenty of water and eat healthily prior to treatment. Avoid smoking if possible. For even greater results, take advantage of the hyperbaric chamber facility available at Malvern and Dingley clinics.

What should I do after my treatment?

There is no down time, you can resume your normal daily activities straight away. Usually, there are no adverse effects other than some mild swelling and tenderness.

Treatment frequency

Frequency and number of treatments will depend individual needs. Most people require three treatments one month apart.
